Pure Protein Dark Chocolate Coconut Review

When I was growing up in my childhood through my early adult years I didn’t like coconut. I wasn’t into either the flavor or the texture. It was a food I made every effort to avoid. As I got older, that distaste for coconut lessened. Now I love coconut, and I drink coconut water as a refreshing drink often. So when I saw the Pure Protein Dark Chocolate Coconut bar I was excited to try it. I like dark chocolate more as I have aged also, so the combination of both dark chocolate and coconut intrigued me. Pure Protein has quite a few flavors in their protein bar line, and this particular one seemed to me to have most potential, as far as taste and texture is concerned.

List Of Ingredients

As with many protein bars, this particular one has sugar alcohol, so as I always mention, keep that in mind.

Protein Blend (Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate), Maltitol Syrup, Dark Chocolate and Coconut Flavored Coating (Palm Kernal Oil, Maltitol, Milk Protein Isolate, Cocoa [processed with alkali], Dextrose, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor), Hydrolyzed Collagen, Glycerin, Cocoa Powder [processed with alkali], Natural Flavors, Dehydrated Coconut, Coconut Flavored Chips (Maltitol, Corn Starch, Canola Oil, Glycerin, Salt, Natural Flavor), Tapioca Starch, Yogurt Flavored Coating (Sugar, Palm Kernal Oil, Nonfat Dry Milk Solids, Yogurt Powder [Cultured Whey Protein Concentrate, Cultured Skim Milk], Soy Lecithin, Salt, Natural Flavor), Water, Sucralose, Soy Lecithin, Almond Butter, Peanut Flour.

Contains milk, soy, peanut, and tree nut (almond, coconut) ingredients.

Two things that should be mentioned is that this is the first bar from Pure Protein that I have reviewed that has yogurt in the ingredients, and also a statement that this bar is partially produced with genetic engineering. This genetic engineering statement has not deterred me from trying food in the past, but I realize that some people may find this off-putting, so I thought I would mention it.

Important Nutrition Facts

Serving Size: 1 Bar, Amount Per Serving: Calories 190, Calories From Fat 50, Total Fat 5g, Saturated Fat 4.5g, Trans Fat 0g, Cholesterol 0mg, Sodium 160mg, Total Carbohydrate 19g, Dietary Fiber 2g, Sugars 1g, Sugar Alcohol 6g, Protein 19g.

This particular bar has some dietary fiber, which is always a plus. The ingredients and nutrition in Pure Protein Bars are relatively similar from bar to bar, but their are slight changes in each. This is why I like to list them all so you can see what is in each bar and compare.

My Honest Review

This Dark Choclate Coconut bar is mild compared to other bars in the Pure Protein Line. Other bars, especially the Chocolate Salted Carmel, are much sweeter and have a much stronger aroma.

This bar has a markedly different texture as well. Although the bar is a bit chewy, it is unlike other Pure Protein bars that I have reviewed so far, in that the middle of the bar doesn’t have a nougat consistency, it is best described as having a dark chocolate cake filling.

It is a bit spongier than the others, but as you chew it smooths out with a great coconut chocolate flavor. The top of the bar is covered with a drizzle of white type cream looking coating, which is the yogurt flavored coating that is in the ingredients I suppose. It gives the bar a nice texture with a bit of crunch.

There is a thin dark chocolate solid coating around the chocolate cake middle, and with these different layers gives the bar a pleasant texture and taste that blends together nicely. I don’t eat this flavor of bar as often as some others, even though I love coconut and dark chocolate together.

This bar packs 19g of protein with 190 calories and will make a great tasting protein filled snack between meals to cut hunger, or after a workout. It is not a meal replacement bar, although when I do eat this flavor on occasion, it is almost always for breakfast. Each bar has only 1g of sugar, which is great.

This protein bar has a great taste, and I would suggest that you give it a try. With a good amount of protein and not much sugar, I feel that it is a good choice for a snack or when working out.

Thanks for that very informative review of the Pure Protein bar. I didn’t realize there was so much to know about protein bars. The word protein has become a bit of a buzz-word with marketers these days as they can charge a whole lot more and not necessarily deliver on the nutrition side. So our website is a very useful source of info. I use protein bars in the afternoon prior to a gym workout and also as a snack when I don’t get a chance to eat a meal. Great review.

    Eric,
Eating healthier now days is important for me and the people in my life. Protein Bars are something I was thinking of adding as snacks for all of us. Is this something that you would recommend? I do like the fact that it is not packed with sugar this is important to me also with children. Just curious what other flavors would be good ones for all of us? Looking forward to more reviews on these to know which ones are best!

Hi Susan, thanks for stopping by. Protein bars can make good snacks, but in moderation. I am just getting started with this site, so every day on average I’d like to post reviews, so please keep visiting. There are so many flavors and companies out now that it is mind boggling. I personally have a Pure Protein bar every morning with breakfast,  it is like eating a candy bar. But keep in mind that many of these bars on the market have lots of sugar, so read the labels. There are many protein bars on the market that are low in sugar, and have clean ingredients, but taste horrible. But yes, they can be used as snacks, as well to build muscle coinciding with a workout program. I will always make sure to list ingredients and nutrition on my reviews. Thanks again for commenting.

I recently started implementing protein bar on my diet for pure convenient reasons like not having to cook a meal or simple cheap to grab plus I do live really near a supermarket so I got my regimen to settle once I finish my boxing workout I normally will eat a meal a save later in the day in combination with the protein bar and coffee and this one its really good.
