So, as I was perusing Facebook checking out my timeline, I came across a protein product in the ads that show up. Being the regular protein bar foodie that I am, I had to try this product. Except that it wasn’t for a protein bar, it was for a protein cookie! Specifically, for Lenny and Larry’s Double Chocolate Complete Cookie. My curiosity got the best of me and I ordered a sample three-pack.The sample pack came with three different flavors, but this review is specifically about the double chocolate cookie.
Protein Bakery Products? Who Would Have Thought?
Having never heard of Lenny and Larry’s before, I decided to do some reading up on the company. It turns out that Lenny and Larry’s was started by a dude from El Segundo California who used to be an American Gladiator named Barry Turner. As the story goes, he and a friend of his were working out at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, when they got the idea to pump muffins with protein. A bakery company that was to cater to the healthy protein eating crowd was born!
Good Stuff In Them Cookies
One of the things that I like about these cookies is what they are NOT! Check out what these cookies are about. There are no dairy ingredients, no egg, no soy, no genetically engineered ingredients (GMO’s), no high fructose corn syrup, aka, sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no cholesterol, and no sugar alcohols! So, what the heck makes the cookies so good? I mean, the Double Chocolate Complete Cookie is delicious!
When I got the sample pack in the mail, the cookies were small, only 2oz. Their typical line of cookies are twice the size, so keep that in mind should you decide to try them. So look at the photos and double everything you see if you buy a regular sized cookie. Two servings per cookie, but honestly, who cuts a cookie in half and eats only half the cookie. Not me. I plan on trying them all, so stay tuned!
My Honest Review
This cookie is awesome, as far as taste is concerned. It is soft and chewy, and is really satisfying if you want a sugary, sweet tasting cookie. It kind of reminds me those soft baked cookies I used to eat as a kid. You know, the cookies that you ate the whole bag of while watching cartoons or college football on a Saturday afternoon. At least I did! This is the smaller 2oz version, so it has 8g of protein. Not bad, but not great.
The chocolate taste is strong, which is good. It didn’t exactly fill me up, but it is the 2oz version, so at 200 calories, it kind of feels like wasted calories to me. Don’t get me wrong, it is delicious. Probably too delicious.
Also, the sugar content is quite high at 12g. The best part is the lack of sugar alcohols, which I normally don’t mind if they are low. There is no high fructose corn syrup either, which is just a fancy way to say sugar. So, yes, it doesn’t have a lot of the sweet stuff of a typical candy bar. However, it does have sugars in other forms that quickly jump up to 24g if you decide to opt for the full size cookie. So keep this in mind if you are watching sugar intake.
As for the everyday eater, this is not a terrible treat, and it does have some value nutritionally. But, if you are a bodybuilder preparing for a contest, I would pass on this cookie as a regular source of protein. For the rest of us, I’d give it a try and see what you think. This is considered a snack, in my opinion, not a meal replacement or a product to pack on muscle.
