Losing weight isn’t easy. It’s even harder to keep it off. We all have issues in our lives that in certain respects are unique to the individual, but most of the trials we have are shared by countless numbers of people all over the world. We are never alone when it comes to trying to find ways to better ourselves. As for me, I have waging war on the battle of the bulge for most of my adult life. This post is about how to motivate yourself to lose weight. That’s what this entire website is about.
While I want this site to focus on protein products, specifically protein bars, sometimes it makes sense to explore why we want or need to lose weight. What motivations get us up in the morning and push us on to achieve our weight loss goals?
Everyone has a reason or two of why they need or want to lose weight. Rarely does a person just decide to lose weight and get healthy just because. There is usually a reason for doing so. I want to let you know what my reasons are, and in doing so, hope that I can spur you on if you are having trouble.
There are countless reasons for a person to seek motivation to lose weight. But in my humble opinion, it all comes down to just a few main reasons. Each individual has their personal, specific reasons for losing weight. But they all come under a few basic headings that I will get into.
Why did I choose to lose weight? Let me indulge you if I could. I was not overweight as a child or through most of my teenage years. However, when I hit my late teens, things began to change.
I always ate whatever I wanted, and didn’t really think about it too much, I was always doing something, running around and playing sports with my friends in the neighborhood. Then I started gaining weight.
I don’t completely remember, but throughout my adult life, I must have lost and gained substantial amounts of weight at least 4 or 5 times. I mean like 50-100 lbs each time. I could eventually take off the weight each time by jogging or lifting weights when I was young, but as I grew older, it became harder.
I had surgery on my left foot in my middle 30s, and that was the end of the jogging. I turned to riding an exercise bike after my surgery and just after my son was born. That time I lose something around 100 lbs. Then I gained it all back and then some until I was fifty.
Now I am at it again, this time losing over 50lbs so far. This is it for me, I may not be perfect with the food, but I will never let myself gain all that weight back again. I have a really good bike now, and a bunch of weights and dumbbells, and I am going to lose the weight, and keep it off for good.
I know this, because before I blindly let myself go and let emotions and how I felt dictate what and when I ate, which was basically whatever I wanted and at any time. Blowing out of my clothes numerous times over the years was not fun, but know I know to catch myself before it happens again. I am making a conscious effort this time.
And I am using protein bars as part of my weight loss routine, along with watching what else I eat. I am not perfect, but unlike before, when I beat myself up for letting myself go, this time I am giving myself some leeway. And exercising on a regular basis. I am winning the battle of the bulge this time and I am using protein bars to help me get there. Hence, the reason for this site.
My Motivation To Lose Weight
If a person doesn’t have some kind of motivation to lose weight, he or she will likely not be successful. At the very least, even if one somehow manages to lose weight, it is unlikely to stay off without a good reason. I am talking about large amounts of weight, like 50 lbs or more.
Many people lose a bit of weight here or gain a bit of weight there, this is normal. But for a person to let him or herself go and gain large amounts of weight, and then lose all that weight, and keep it off, there has to be a legitimate reason. These are MY motivations for losing weight.
1. My Health
I have had high blood pressure and high cholesterol for many years. These are conditions that I can control my doctor tells me. It is true that many physical conditions run in families, but the high blood pressure and high cholesterol is not the case with me.
I have been told for years that if I lost a significant amount of weight, the high blood pressure and high cholesterol could be tamed. Basically, they are self-inflicted health problems that can be reversed. And sure enough, as I visited my doctor recently, and after I lost 50 lbs, the numbers came down. Plus, he told me that if I continue to lose more weight, I can be weaned off most of the medications that I have been on for years.
My doctor was pleasantly surprised, as he has been hounding me to lose the weight for years now. This is one of the main motivations for me to keep going.
I am not 20 anymore, I am 50, and the time to screw off is over. I feel the need to lose weight and keep it off for the true reality that I am getting older, as we all are.
But now it is paramount to make this work because time is of the essence, and I know that it won’t end well if something isn’t done. As a young person I just wasn’wasn’t all that concerned. Now I am.
2. My Family
My second motivation for losing weight is my family, specifically my son. One thing that does tend to run in both my side of the family and my wife’s side, is that we all tend to gain weight easily. To be an example to my son keeps me on track when it comes to weight loss.
He has seen me as a pretty hefty guy, who has not always been able to do things with him, such as play sports. At times, even getting up off the floor has been an issue for me, and it got to a point when I realized that I was not being the best dad I could be for him.
And other people around me would give me derogatory looks and stares, and even make comments, and I knew that this made my son feel uncomfortable. I got tired of putting him through that.
So, the weight loss is now not just for my personal health, but for the well-being of my son, and that is a great motivation.
The fact that I was getting the third degree from my mom and wife was also a reason to get fitter. The best way to get them to ease up on the weight loss talks was to do something positive with my health, and since I have lost a good amount of weight, the worry from them has subsided. After all, they only care about me and I appreciate that.
3. My Self Esteem
Let’s be honest, I have been married for over twenty years, and I am not out to impress anybody. The days of me working out to have a hard muscular body for the ladies has past.
Now it’s all about how I feel about myself, and since the weight loss, my self-esteem and self-image has greatly improved. In turn, that puts me in a better frame of mind for not only myself, but the surrounding people. This is a great motivation for me to keep pushing forward.
I am not ever going to be Brad Pitt, and I may never have that washboard stomach, but hey, I feel good about me. Losing weight and feeling better about one’s self is awesome.
And I get to shed the fat guy clothes, fit into some better garb, and look in the mirror and see consistent improvement, and that means a lot to me!
These are my three motivations for losing the weight, and keeping it off. You may have these same motivations, or you may have more specific one’s, but either way, find a reason to drop those extra pounds, and stick to it.
I would never suggest to eating protein bars over healthy food. I am not perfect with the eating, I must admit. Eating fruit and vegetables, as well as a healthy protein source, such as chicken, turkey, fish or lean red meat is always a first choice.
However, getting some protein from some of the countless products out in the market can help you achieve your weight loss goals. I can attest to this firsthand, as I have lost over 50 lbs so far with the help of protein bars.
