When I was a kid, I distinctly remember eating a whole box of Lemon Drops up in my bedroom in my apartment. After eating said box, I proceeded to become very ill. For the longest time, I equated lemon flavor to being sick to my stomach and generally feeling horrible. Fast forward 40 years or so, and now lemon is a flavor that I love. Since there is not a lot of lemon flavored protein bars available, I am excited to taste the FitJoy Grandma’s Lemon Square Protein Bar.
I have enjoyed both the FitJoy Chocolate Peanut Butter and Cookies and Cream protein bars that I previously reviewed, so this should be a treat. The ingredients list on the lemon bar reads similar to the other two bars, with Stevia being the sweetener in all of them. You can read about Stevia here.
List Of Ingredients
Dairy Protein Blend [Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Crisps (Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Tapioca Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Sunflower Lecithin)], VitaFiber Isomalto-Oligosaccharides, Yogurt Flavored Coating [Milk Protein Concentrate, Palm Kernel Oil, Erythritol, Yogurt Powder (Whey Protein Concentrate, Nonfat Dry Milk, Yogurt Cultures), Sugar, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor], Vegetable Glycerin, Water, Chicory Root Fiber, White Coating (Sugar, Fractionated Palm Kernal Oil, Natural Flavor, Sunflower Lecithin, Salt), High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Natural Flavor, Lemon Flavored Pieces [Sugar, Palm Kernel and Palm Oil, Whey, Whole Milk, Citric Acid, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavor, Turmeric Oleoresin (for color)], Cocoa Butter, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Yellow Color [Maltodextrin, Turmeric], Salt, Stevia.
As you can see, the list is quite long, and the ingredients are certainly not clean, however, they are similar to the ingredients lists of the other FitJoy bars. The only major difference is the coloring of the lemon bar.
Important Nutrition Facts
Serving Size – 1 Bar, Calories 220, Total Fat 7g, Saturated Fat 4g, Trans Fat 0g, Cholesterol 10mg, Sodium 180mg, Potassium 105mg, Total Carbohydrate 25g, Dietary Fiber 11g, Sugars 5g, Protein 20g.
This bar has fiber, is low in sugar, and has a decent amount of protein. I don’t see any mention of sugar alcohol, which many of the protein bars on the market have, and this is a good thing in my opinion.
My Honest Review
As I opened the packaging, I get a small smell of lemon, not overpowering. I have eaten a lot of the sugary lemon squares that are sold in the bakery department of my local grocery store, and this protein bar tastes almost exactly the same, just not as sweet.
Although, as protein bars go, this lemon bar is quite sweet. I must say that it is delicious. If you like the flavor of lemon, you will probably like this bar.
It is very moist and creamy, with a white drizzle on the top layer of the bar. It has a lemony yogurt coating around the whole bar, and there is the slightest crunch, but it is very faint. The top later is the consistency of soft fudge, and the second layer is more like cake.
This is a very delicious, decadent tasting protein bar, which has very little protein taste at all. It finishes with little to no aftertaste. I would highly recommend you try this protein bar, especially if you like lemon. I would consider this a snacking bar, to get more protein in your diet, not a meal replacement bar. It is well worth a taste.
